{"id":712,"date":"2009-11-16T18:38:25","date_gmt":"2009-11-17T02:38:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.caddmanager.com\/CMB\/?p=712"},"modified":"2009-11-16T19:27:00","modified_gmt":"2009-11-17T03:27:00","slug":"personal-cad-standards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.caddmanager.com\/CMB\/2009\/11\/personal-cad-standards\/","title":{"rendered":"Personal CAD Standards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Can you be productive without a CAD Standard?<\/p>\n<p>I have asked this question to many users over the years&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>I get the same answer most of the time&#8230;\u00a0 &#8220;Yes &#8211;\u00a0 I can be productive without a CAD Standard&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>When I delve into the issue a little more they tend to rethink what they have said.<\/p>\n<p>At first blush, the answer above is correct.\u00a0 I really don&#8217;t argue their perspective.\u00a0 They are correct, if they are thinking of a printed hard copy standard that is sitting on their desk or stored as a PDF file on their system.<\/p>\n<p>It is correct because the standard is in their heads and it is a personal standard.\u00a0 Personal standards are developed and used all the time.\u00a0 They are created on the fly, by the person behind the mouse.\u00a0 It is theirs and they love it.\u00a0 They settle into systems of production that work well for them.\u00a0 They define symbols, layers, layouts, definitions and more.\u00a0 All in their heads.\u00a0 All working great on their files, on their PC.<\/p>\n<p>We all do this &#8211; it is a natural process.\u00a0 You are not going to make things up as you go forever.\u00a0 You are going to settle into patterns.\u00a0 These patterns become your personal standard.\u00a0 It works great &#8211; as long as you are the only person working on the files and projects from start to finish.<\/p>\n<p>But &#8211; and here is the bigger issue that I bring up&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>If you have to share your work &#8211; it begins to fail.\u00a0 You might share your work with only one other person &#8211; but wait&#8230; they do things differently.\u00a0 They don&#8217;t do things the way that you do.\u00a0 They use their personal standard which is different from yours.\u00a0 Now you get frustrated because you have &#8220;work with&#8221; their files, or you have to &#8220;fix&#8221; their files.\u00a0 Note: they are thinking the same thing &#8211; they are frustrated also.<\/p>\n<p>Expand that to sharing project work inside your firm with a team of players.\u00a0 If they all do whatever they want &#8211; it will be chaos.\u00a0 Add on consultants that do not work in your office. Now add on delivery of the files for future use by someone that you don&#8217;t even know.\u00a0 It snowballs into\u00a0 totally dysfunctional files.<\/p>\n<p>Enter the CAD Standard.\u00a0 Created to unify the production methods of CAD.\u00a0\u00a0 Shared by all.<\/p>\n<p>Without it &#8211; chaos.\u00a0 With it &#8211; the possibility of unity (possible but not guaranteed)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Can you be productive without a CAD Standard?
