{"id":3511,"date":"2006-03-01T06:00:00","date_gmt":"2006-03-01T13:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.caddmanager.com\/CMB\/?p=3511"},"modified":"2016-02-01T09:33:40","modified_gmt":"2016-02-01T16:33:40","slug":"forgotten-habits-of-autocad-users-part-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.caddmanager.com\/CMB\/2006\/03\/forgotten-habits-of-autocad-users-part-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Forgotten Habits of AutoCAD Users &#8211; Part 3"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Habit #1 was reading \u2013 reading whatever you can get your hands on. \u00a0Now we move on to other forgotten habits.<\/p>\n<p><b>Forgotten Habit #2 &#8211; Looking Backwards <\/b><\/p>\n<p>Many of us find that we are constantly moving forward and trying to embrace the \u201cnew features\u201d of each release of the software. \u00a0We strain to understand the latest new tool that Autodesk provides. \u00a0Many of these tools really do improve our CAD experience and enhance our production efforts. \u00a0Just when I think that AutoCAD has matured so much that there is nothing left to add, Autodesk developers pop out some unexpected treats.<\/p>\n<p>But let\u2019s not forget the old tools, the tried and true tools that have gotten us this far. \u00a0Good AutoCAD users will take a look back to see what they have not fully exploited in the existing tools. \u00a0I do this by re-reading the User Guide that comes with the software. \u00a0By reading the book again you may be surprised by how much more you find. \u00a0You may not have the same needs or perspectives you did the first time you went through the book. \u00a0By taking time to review the tools you thought you knew so well, you may find some hidden jewels. \u00a0If your software did not come with the book, then go to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.autodeskbookrequest.com\">www.autodeskbookrequest.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I often go to the help files and do a search on some of the basics, like \u201clayer\u201d and find some little trick to help me get more bang for my CAD buck. \u00a0Sometimes you get a good laugh from what might be in the Help files. \u00a0Like this\u2026<\/p>\n<p><i>Note:\u00a0It is recommended that you create several new layers with which to organize your drawing rather than create your entire drawing on layer 0.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Yes \u2013 that is really in the help files. \u00a0Do you know anyone who might need to read that?<\/p>\n<p>Here is something I just found. \u00a0Did you know this? \u2013 Straight from the AutoCAD Help files.<\/p>\n<p><b>To rename more than one layer <\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<ol>\n<ol>\n<ol>\n<li>On the command line, enter <b>rename<\/b>.<\/li>\n<li>In the Rename dialog box, in the Named Objects list, select Layers.<\/li>\n<li>In Old Name, enter the old name, using wild-card characters; for example, enter <b>stairs$*<\/b>.<\/li>\n<li>In Rename To, enter the new name using wild-card characters; for example, enter <b>s_*<\/b>.<\/li>\n<li>Click <b>Rename To<\/b> to apply changes and continue, or click OK.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/ol>\n<\/ol>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Results for this example are as follows: the layers STAIR$LEVEL-1, STAIR$LEVEL-2, STAIR$LEVEL-3 are renamed S_LEVEL-1, S_LEVEL-2, S_LEVEL-3.<\/p>\n<p>Well, maybe you did know this trick \u2013 but I bet some of you did not. \u00a0So take some time and look at the old tools again.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Habit #1 was reading \u2013 reading whatever you can get your hands on. \u00a0Now we move on to other forgotten habits.
