{"id":3122,"date":"2014-01-23T06:39:38","date_gmt":"2014-01-23T13:39:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.caddmanager.com\/CMB\/?p=3122"},"modified":"2014-01-19T21:13:42","modified_gmt":"2014-01-20T04:13:42","slug":"critical-conversations-about-cad-talking-points","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.caddmanager.com\/CMB\/2014\/01\/critical-conversations-about-cad-talking-points\/","title":{"rendered":"Critical Conversations about CAD \u2013 Talking Points"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"seriesmeta\">This entry is part 4 of 8 in the series <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caddmanager.com\/CMB\/series\/critical-conversations\/\" class=\"series-78\" title=\"Critical Conversations\">Critical Conversations<\/a><\/div><p>We discussed what to watch for and who to talk to.\u00a0 Now we move on to how to talk when you have to have a critical conversation.<\/p>\n<p>There are three levels that I usually try to frame my discussions with people when something comes up that I have to address.\u00a0 I frame them under the lead off words I might use when starting the conversation.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I noticed that&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>I am concerned about&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>We have an issue&#8230;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Let&#8217;s cover the first one.\u00a0 What you notice are the things that appear to be gathering into patterns.\u00a0 They may appear random at first, but their appears to be a coalescing theme coming into the light.\u00a0 You notice that several drawing are not plotting out right.\u00a0 You notice that people have come to you asking for help finding where project blocks are located.\u00a0 You hear someone having a conversation over the cubicle wall telling a coworker about replacing blocks in a file.\u00a0 There is a pattern coming out of these random observations.\u00a0 See the linkage&#8230;\u00a0 bad blocks???<\/p>\n<p>Now is the time to step in.\u00a0 It may be nothing or it may be the start of something very bad.\u00a0 Time for a critical conversation.\u00a0 Here is how it might go&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Hey Steve, I notice that you had some problems getting a file to plot.\u00a0 What project was that?\u00a0 Hey Julie, I noticed that you asked about where the blocks were stored.\u00a0 Did you need those for a project?\u00a0 which one?\u00a0 Tom, did I notice you say that there were some blocks that needed to be replaced on a file the other day?\u00a0 what project was that?<\/p>\n<p>All of these questions were not accusative nor divulging any specifics about possible concerns.\u00a0 You are just gathering information.\u00a0 You are looking a little deeper into a possible pattern.\u00a0 You are trying to uncover what might be impacting the workflow.\u00a0 It is a process that is a few steps back from the actual impact zone.\u00a0 You are not looking to get in people faces.\u00a0 That may cause them to stop providing information because they might think you are accusing or looking for someone to blame.<\/p>\n<p>By taking a low key approach, you will gather little pieces of the overall puzzle.\u00a0 Putting together that puzzle may take you to step two in your critical conversations.\u00a0 Uncovering a Concern.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<br>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"seriesmeta\">This entry is part 4 of 8 in the series <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caddmanager.com\/CMB\/series\/critical-conversations\/\" class=\"series-78\" title=\"Critical Conversations\">Critical Conversations<\/a><\/div><p>We discussed what to watch for and who to talk to.\u00a0 Now we move on to how to talk when you have to have a critical conversation.
