{"id":3101,"date":"2014-01-21T06:43:04","date_gmt":"2014-01-21T13:43:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.caddmanager.com\/CMB\/?p=3101"},"modified":"2014-01-19T16:59:40","modified_gmt":"2014-01-19T23:59:40","slug":"critical-conversations-about-cad-triggers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.caddmanager.com\/CMB\/2014\/01\/critical-conversations-about-cad-triggers\/","title":{"rendered":"Critical Conversations about CAD &#8211; Triggers"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"seriesmeta\">This entry is part 2 of 8 in the series <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caddmanager.com\/CMB\/series\/critical-conversations\/\" class=\"series-78\" title=\"Critical Conversations\">Critical Conversations<\/a><\/div><p>Last time we discussed why some detrimental items in CAD may go unnoticed, avoided, uncorrected and worst of all seen by the client.\u00a0 We encouraged CAD Managers to have these critical conversations with those on the production team and higher.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Topics that Might Trigger Critical Conversation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You might ask, &#8220;What areas should you be looking at that might cause troubles and that might generate a critical conversation?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Anything can trigger a conversation about CAD, but what might trigger the critical discussions that can keep a project moving and avoid troubled waters.\u00a0 You should be having general conversations about CAD topics with everyone on your team.\u00a0 Just the casual style chatter that surrounds CAD work&#8230; you know, things like &#8220;what layer are you using for this? When do you update the backgrounds? who needs to know about this change and approve it?&#8221;\u00a0 These short talks can keep things moving and are not critical in nature until something does go wrong.<\/p>\n<p>But there are some areas that keep you up at night.\u00a0 The ones that you see happening again and again.\u00a0 The ones that infect a project and destroy any standards that you may be trying to maintain. Here is my short list of things that should be watched.<\/p>\n<p>Violations of the CAD Standard &#8211; this is a big area, but a few quick checks on a set of project files can turn up areas of concern. I have listed the essential areas to look at, but they always deserve a review.\u00a0 Here they are again.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Standard Folders \u2013 names, locations, relationships, contents<\/li>\n<li>Project Names \u2013 numbering, names<\/li>\n<li>File Names \u2013 correct and consistent<\/li>\n<li>Layer Names, Line styles, Pen Weights<\/li>\n<li>Pen Tables \u2013 CTB, STB<\/li>\n<li>Lettering Fonts and Sizes \u2013 fonts, style names<\/li>\n<li>Dimension Styles \u2013 exact names, consistent use<\/li>\n<li>Drafting Symbols \u2013 your basic symbology is always used<\/li>\n<li>Xref Usage \u2013 naming, content, attachment method<\/li>\n<li>Layout tabs \u2013 names, format, page setup<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Beyond the CAD standard you might pay attention to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Consistent Presentation<\/li>\n<li>Detail Sheet Layout and presentation<\/li>\n<li>Level of Detail that is used<\/li>\n<li>Title Block text, abbreviations and wording<\/li>\n<li>Graphic element locations (Key map, North Arrow, Graphic Scale)<\/li>\n<li>Spelling<\/li>\n<li>Logos<\/li>\n<li>Dates and Names (like client names &#8211; I have seen them misspelled)<\/li>\n<li>Title of the Submittal (Plan Check, Client Review)<\/li>\n<li>Cross Reference numbers are correct<\/li>\n<li>Legibility of the drawings<\/li>\n<li>Nomenclature &#8211; callouts<\/li>\n<li>Project Title Block presentation and layout<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When you see problems in these areas that are a pattern and not just random errors, you may want to consider having a critical conversation with someone.\u00a0 Again &#8211; this is when you see a pattern&#8230; Repeating, recurring, over and over, etc.<\/p>\n<p>Next post&#8230; Who to Talk To<\/p>\n<br>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"seriesmeta\">This entry is part 2 of 8 in the series <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caddmanager.com\/CMB\/series\/critical-conversations\/\" class=\"series-78\" title=\"Critical Conversations\">Critical Conversations<\/a><\/div><p>Last time we discussed why some detrimental items in CAD may go unnoticed, avoided, uncorrected and worst of all seen by the client.\u00a0 We encouraged CAD Managers to have these critical conversations with those on the production team and higher.
