{"id":2780,"date":"2012-05-23T05:48:10","date_gmt":"2012-05-23T12:48:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.caddmanager.com\/CMB\/?p=2780"},"modified":"2012-05-22T08:52:19","modified_gmt":"2012-05-22T15:52:19","slug":"ambiguity-of-your-duties-trials-of-a-new-cad-manager","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.caddmanager.com\/CMB\/2012\/05\/ambiguity-of-your-duties-trials-of-a-new-cad-manager\/","title":{"rendered":"Ambiguity of your Duties &#8211; Trials of a New CAD Manager"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"seriesmeta\">This entry is part 3 of 7 in the series <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caddmanager.com\/CMB\/series\/trials-of-a-new-cad-manager\/\" class=\"series-71\" title=\"The Trials of a New CAD Manager\">The Trials of a New CAD Manager<\/a><\/div><p><strong>Trial Three:\u00a0 Ambiguity of your Duties: What am I supposed to do?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sometimes new managers really do not have a full understanding of what they are to be doing.\u00a0 Most have a good grip on what it took to get them the position, but if they are growing into the spot, they may not see all the functions that need addressing out of the gate.\u00a0 Even tenured CAD Managers have some ambiguity when stepping into a new firm.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Symptoms of this Trial:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Some indications to look for to see if you are suffering from this difficulty is to listen to others.\u00a0 Do you hear things like \u201cI thought that was your job\u201d or \u201cWeren\u2019t you going to do that?\u201d or maybe even \u201cObviously we expect you to do that\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Other indicators might not be so obvious.\u00a0 They include the perceptions by others of what you do on a daily or weekly basis.\u00a0 The perception may be nowhere close to reality and you may not hear anyone saying anything.\u00a0 Under their breath or out of earshot questions may rise like \u201cwhat does he do all day?\u201d or \u201cIt seems like she is not doing much\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>When this Trial comes your way:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While not being able to address the unspoken feelings of others, you can address the comments directed toward you.\u00a0 When someone mentions that it is \u201cyour job\u201d to do such and such.\u00a0 Either correct them or admit that you will get to it.\u00a0 You could say \u201c I thought so and so did that. I would love to take on that issue. Can I get started now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The best way to address the areas of influence and control that you may or may not know about is to ask your boss.\u00a0 Have a conversation with them and ask then what they expect from you on a daily, weekly basis.\u00a0 Discuss areas that you think might be yours and ask if they are.\u00a0 Mention all areas that you can think of and then ask if there are any more.\u00a0 Let them know what you think your focus should be and get them to validate your thinking or adjust it.\u00a0 Just ask people what they expect.<\/p>\n<p>To avoid the \u201cwhat does she do all day\u201d issues, be open and demonstrative about what you are doing each day and week.\u00a0 Provide reports on progress, either formal and written or just informal verbal updates to your boss and others.\u00a0 Chat up what you are doing to others without it sounding boastful.\u00a0 Just drop a few here and there in conversations.\u00a0 \u201cDid you see the new plotting process I wrote down and placed on the plotter?\u00a0 Do you think that might help?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cDid you see the email I sent out about folder setup on the server?
