You cannot decide what to do next until you know what or where there is a problem or opportunity for progress.\u00a0 Identifying these is the first step.<\/p>\n

Problems and issues that come up are easy to identify.\u00a0 They present themselves every day and just need to be addressed.\u00a0 But what exactly are you looking for?\u00a0 Here is a way of narrowing the search for the real problem.<\/p>\n

I look in five areas for my troubleshooting: (taken from my BAD CAD <\/a>series)<\/p>\n

The Files\u00a0<\/strong>– This is the first place I look.\u00a0 Most often the file or an object in the file is corrupt.\u00a0 I need to find out if the problem is resident in the files as they were created, edited, plotted, etc.\u00a0 I look here first and spread my investigation to the following areas in order<\/p>\n

The Machine\u00a0<\/strong>– Next I look to the persons PC.\u00a0 Does the problem only\u00a0 happen on one machine?\u00a0 Is it a machine or system variable that is set incorrectly?\u00a0 Is it hardware troubles?<\/p>\n

The User\u00a0<\/strong>– I always talk to the user to find out what has happened, what happened before it broke and how they got to where they are.\u00a0 It is quite often a mistake, a misunderstood tool or a bad click that got them here.<\/p>\n

The Server\u00a0<\/strong>– Sometimes the network or server hardware acts up.\u00a0 Don’t forget to look here.<\/p>\n

The Software\u00a0<\/strong>– There are always “bugs” in the software.\u00a0 A tool that is not yet mature, not designed to be used in the way it is used or just not programmed correctly.<\/p>\n
