{"id":2550,"date":"2011-08-22T07:45:19","date_gmt":"2011-08-22T14:45:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.caddmanager.com\/CMB\/?p=2550"},"modified":"2012-11-08T16:53:39","modified_gmt":"2012-11-08T23:53:39","slug":"initiative-principles-of-cad-management","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.caddmanager.com\/CMB\/2011\/08\/initiative-principles-of-cad-management\/","title":{"rendered":"Initiative &#8211; Principles of CAD Management"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"seriesmeta\">This entry is part 16 of 17 in the series <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caddmanager.com\/CMB\/series\/principles-of-cad-management\/\" class=\"series-75\" title=\"Principles of CAD Management\">Principles of CAD Management<\/a><\/div><p>Nearing the end of Fayol&#8217;s list of 14 principles brings us to Initiative.<\/p>\n<p>Many of his principles stand the test of time and especially this one.\u00a0 Allowing personal initiative in employees will garner creativity, energy, personal efforts and more.\u00a0 When people are allowed to work toward an idea that they have come up with or embraced,they work harder.\u00a0 When they have the perspective of personal ownership in something or a stake in the outcome, they work harder and with zeal.<\/p>\n<p>Initiative is a readiness, willingness and ability to initiate action.<\/p>\n<p>How does this work itself out in a CAD environment and what can a CAD Manager do to encourage personal initiative?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nurturing Initiative<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Readiness &#8211; Employees need to be ready to initiate things.\u00a0 Readiness comes when you provide the basic environment that allows others to take action. This environment will allow workers access to software and hardware tools that are needed.\u00a0 It also provides (controlled) access to standard files, setups, configurations and troubleshooting tools.<\/p>\n<p>Willingness -Users have to be willing to take action.\u00a0 This comes from an environment that allows mistakes to be made without retribution.\u00a0 It rewards initiative and action.\u00a0 It seeks out those that are willing to do something and makes them heroes.\u00a0 It nurtures the willing to take action.\u00a0 It encourages teamwork and communication so that no one is just off doing their own thing.<\/p>\n<p>Ability &#8211; Team members have to have the ability to correct, create and control their work environment (working inside the global firm guidelines).\u00a0 They may be ready and willing &#8211; but if they can&#8217;t actually make anything happen, then they will soon wander off.\u00a0 Give them access (again, controlled) to more areas as they prove their ability to make the right call.<\/p>\n<p>Initiate Action &#8211; They need to actually do something.\u00a0 Initiative is not just complaining or whining about the current situation.\u00a0 It is not letting someone else know about an issue so they can fix it (although it might include this).\u00a0 It is taking action.\u00a0 It is making a call.\u00a0 It is creating or refining a process.\u00a0 Initiative is hands on.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<br>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"seriesmeta\">This entry is part 16 of 17 in the series <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caddmanager.com\/CMB\/series\/principles-of-cad-management\/\" class=\"series-75\" title=\"Principles of CAD Management\">Principles of CAD Management<\/a><\/div><p>Nearing the end of Fayol&#8217;s list of 14 principles brings us to Initiative.
