{"id":2085,"date":"2010-10-25T06:30:28","date_gmt":"2010-10-25T13:30:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.caddmanager.com\/CMB\/?p=2085"},"modified":"2010-10-25T09:23:33","modified_gmt":"2010-10-25T16:23:33","slug":"cad-manager-what-next","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.caddmanager.com\/CMB\/2010\/10\/cad-manager-what-next\/","title":{"rendered":"CAD Manager \u2013 What next?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CAD Managers who are eager to challenge themselves or prove their worth may take on additional responsibilities outside of their traditional roles.\u00a0 It is not always the best thing if your employer thinks that these tasks place your CAD duties at the back of the line.\u00a0 When you step outside your job description you take a chance that others may think you are ducking your job duties or stepping into other peoples areas.<\/p>\n<p>If you stay within the defined areas of your oversight you may lose opportunities to prove your value.\u00a0 You may miss showing others that you can and should take on additional functions.\u00a0 I encourage you to move beyond your formal boundaries but to do so with caution.<\/p>\n<p>Is your CAD Manager position becoming old hat to you?\u00a0 Have you grown tired of doing the same things over and over?\u00a0 Do you desire new assignments that will stretch you in new directions?<\/p>\n<p>Before you step beyond your job description, take some time to think about why you want to do this.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Are you trying to add other things on to invigorate you career?<\/strong> Do the things you are tasked with doing no longer excite you?\u00a0 If that is the case then it might be time to ask for more duties.\u00a0 You may need to pass on some tasks to others.\u00a0 There are others in your firm that might enjoy some of the stuff that you do.\u00a0 Be careful though.\u00a0 Once you give something away you may not get it back.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Will it change the company\u2019s view of your value \u2013 positive or negative? <\/strong> Your firm hired you to do a job and they want that job done to the best of your ability.\u00a0 If you add on other tasks will it water down your effectiveness?\u00a0 Will they think that you are not as valuable?\u00a0 It might actually increase your value to the firm.\u00a0 Moving beyond the job description may show others that you can do much more than just oversee CAD or BIM.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you want to add to your role or change it?<\/strong> Are you looking to add responsibilities on to your existing role or are you really looking to change your role?\u00a0 If you add things on to enhance your enjoyment or challenge then the lesser valued tasks will be pushed aside.\u00a0 If you are looking for a change, then adding on will overwhelm you and may not satisfy what you really are seeking.\u00a0 If you want a total change, then don\u2019t settle for just adding on a few things.\u00a0 Work toward a total change.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you know what you want to do? <\/strong>You need to know where you want to go with your career.\u00a0 Don\u2019t let you career wander around.\u00a0 Make a plan and move toward fulfilling your plan.\u00a0 Make adjustments along the road as circumstances change, but keep moving forward.\u00a0 First \u2013 make sure you know where you are headed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Can CAD move forward without you?<\/strong> If you decide to add on responsibilities or change your role completely you need to make sure that the CAD environment can continue without you, especially if you are staying with the company.\u00a0 Start arranging your workload and delegate tasks that others can do.\u00a0 Then move toward your next assignment with gusto.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Can you handle not knowing everything? <\/strong> Taking on a new role means that you will not be the expert that you have become in the CAD arena.\u00a0 New roles mean new information to absorb.\u00a0 You may not know it all at the beginning.
