{"id":2024,"date":"2010-09-08T09:41:36","date_gmt":"2010-09-08T16:41:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.caddmanager.com\/CMB\/?p=2024"},"modified":"2010-09-08T09:42:15","modified_gmt":"2010-09-08T16:42:15","slug":"where-do-best-practices-come-from","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.caddmanager.com\/CMB\/2010\/09\/where-do-best-practices-come-from\/","title":{"rendered":"Where do Best Practices come from?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Best practices in CAD or BIM come from many differing places and people.\u00a0  They may be pulled in from another firm when someone joins your team.\u00a0  They may be developed by some creative chap in your office.\u00a0 They may  come from internet searches or even just dumb luck.<\/p>\n<p>They can appear randomly or in a more structured process.\u00a0 Any way that you gather them is fine, but is there a way that might improve the odds of finding and embracing best practices?<\/p>\n<p>What are the best practices for developing best practices?<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few tips from my experience that might help you&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>1.\u00a0 Document your existing processes. <\/strong>Unless you know what you are  doing at the present time and have it written down, it is hard to find what can be  improved.\u00a0 The first step in making things better is just knowing what  is going on at the present time.\u00a0 It may be the existing CAD Standard that you have or you may have to start from scratch and write it all down.\u00a0 If the CAD Standard is outdated, then you may need to add more documents that explain what is actually happening now.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.\u00a0 Look for holes. <\/strong>If after you have documented your process you  find that some areas are a little vague and no one is sure how something  is done, it may be a hole.\u00a0 Maybe not everyone knows about this area of  a process.\u00a0 This might be an easy win if you just get the process down  in print.\u00a0 Holes will be filled by users with differing methods.\u00a0 The work has to get done and they will\u00a0 find a way to do it.\u00a0 So understand that holes in the documentation may be filled by others.\u00a0 You need to fill the holes with one method of choice.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.\u00a0 Unify the process.<\/strong> As you write down the processes, look for  differing opinions on how it is done.\u00a0 One team may do things one way  and another group may do it differently.\u00a0 Just by getting them to agree  to which is better and then getting them to do it all the same way is an  improvement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4.\u00a0 Look for patterns of productivity.<\/strong> Keep your eyes open for those  teams or users that get things done efficiently.\u00a0 Those that  consistently produce faster or better than others.\u00a0 Watch what they do  and ask them what their tricks are.\u00a0 This is the beginning of a developing best practice.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Best practices in CAD or BIM come from many differing places and people.\u00a0 They may be pulled in from another firm when someone joins your team.\u00a0 They may be developed by some creative chap in your office.\u00a0 They may come from internet searches or even just dumb luck.
