However, it is often noted that  demonstrated best practices can be slow to spread, even within an  organization. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>They go on to say&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><em>According to the American Productivity &amp; Quality  Center, the three main barriers to adoption of a best practice are a  lack of knowledge about current best practices, a lack of motivation to  make changes involved in their adoption, and a lack of knowledge and  skills required to do so.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>So if one area of your firm has adopted something as a best practice, but others have not, is it really a best practice?<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s examine the proliferation of the best practices related to CAD or BIM.<\/p>\n<p><strong>First &#8211; it is written down &#8211; right? <\/strong>That may sound like a dumb question, but is it?\u00a0 Do you expect a process improvement to spread without documentation?\u00a0 So write it down first.\u00a0 Make it official.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Next &#8211; Offer it as an option.<\/strong> Change for some is not easy.\u00a0\u00a0 Deeply entrenched <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caddmanager.com\/CMB\/2010\/09\/when-workarounds-become-best-practices\/\">workarounds <\/a>can be hard to break.\u00a0 Go back and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caddmanager.com\/CMB\/2010\/09\/when-workarounds-become-best-practices\/\">read the post on this<\/a>.\u00a0 Offering a change as an option may soften the change perspective.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And &#8211; Make sure that the average user can use the process.<\/strong> Don&#8217;t create fanciful new ways of doing things that only the whiz kids can understand.\u00a0 It has to be simple and easy to use.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Also &#8211; let success spread. <\/strong> If offered as an option, then if it is truly better, it should spread on its own.\u00a0 New users will adopt better and easier ways of getting things done.\u00a0 As teams move from one project to another, the better way will spread.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Finally &#8211; Add it to your training.<\/strong> Make it part of your training efforts with all users.\u00a0 Give them tutorials or quick training lessons to show them how to use the new method.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When does something become a best practice?\u00a0 How does it become standard procedure?
