{"id":1965,"date":"2010-08-16T17:25:41","date_gmt":"2010-08-17T00:25:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.caddmanager.com\/CMB\/?p=1965"},"modified":"2010-08-16T20:37:39","modified_gmt":"2010-08-17T03:37:39","slug":"managing-from-one-step-back","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.caddmanager.com\/CMB\/2010\/08\/managing-from-one-step-back\/","title":{"rendered":"Managing from One Step Back"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CAD Managers work in an environment where they can get their work done by taking a hands on approach.\u00a0 They do the actual work themselves.\u00a0 They are charged with customizing or standardizing a process and they develop the outline and procedures to do so.\u00a0 There is a need for custom content and they create it.<\/p>\n<p>But there is also a portion of the job that requires them to take one step back.\u00a0 To move away from the work and motivate others to actually do it.\u00a0 They become an encourager. They spur others on to get things done.\u00a0 It is one step back because they are moving others to actions that they have planned themselves.\u00a0 They get others to follow guidelines that they produced.<\/p>\n<p>In this role the CAD Manager works through others.\u00a0 They are not coming in direct contact with the work, but they are directly coming in contact with those who do.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some tips for making these interactions more productive:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Make it Simple &#8211; Keep it Simple<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Make sure that your instructions are clear, easy and correct.\u00a0 If it is a procedure &#8211; check it before you distribute it.\u00a0 Verify that it works.\u00a0 If it is a component, make sure it is perfect and proper to the task.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t over complicate the task.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Enlighten Others<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Pass on the reasons why you are asking them to do something in a specific way.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t let the standard be silently commanding something that appears confusing.Give them the reason that you have written or communicated what you have.\u00a0 Explain it &#8211; even if it seems obvious.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t use terms like &#8220;because I said so&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Encourage Others<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Do this by complimenting them for getting it completed and correct.\u00a0 Just short little phrases like, &#8220;that is perfect&#8221; or &#8220;wow, you picked that up quick&#8221;.\u00a0 And thank them for doing a good job.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stay One Step Back<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t take over the work.\u00a0 One of the hardest things to do is to watch someone do something incorrectly.\u00a0 In all areas of our lives we think of ways that people should have done something differently.\u00a0 We watch TV and comment on the wrong choices people make and what they should have done to get it right.\u00a0 If we can &#8211; we want to jump in and show them how it&#8217;s done.\u00a0 In the CAD world, we do that also.\u00a0 So, when you are explaining something, keep them in the drivers seat.\u00a0 Fight the temptation to grab the mouse.\u00a0 You may have to show them the first time, but after that keep them in control of the machine and provide instruction from over their shoulder.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CAD Managers work in an environment where they can get their work done by taking a hands on approach.\u00a0 They do the actual work themselves.\u00a0 They are charged with customizing or standardizing a process and they develop the outline and procedures to do so.\u00a0 There is a need for custom content and they create it.
