{"id":1720,"date":"2010-04-05T06:17:16","date_gmt":"2010-04-05T14:17:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.caddmanager.com\/CMB\/?p=1720"},"modified":"2010-04-05T06:17:16","modified_gmt":"2010-04-05T14:17:16","slug":"effecting-change-by-persuasion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.caddmanager.com\/CMB\/2010\/04\/effecting-change-by-persuasion\/","title":{"rendered":"Effecting Change by Persuasion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CAD Managers are called on to change things.\u00a0 They are change agents.\u00a0 They need to get others to move from one thing to another.\u00a0 From one software release to another, from one method of production to another, or from one standard to another (there <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caddmanager.com\/CMB\/2009\/11\/personal-cad-standards\/\">personal standard<\/a> to the company standard).<\/p>\n<p>So how do you get people to change.\u00a0 I want to delve into several ways&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>1.\u00a0 Power<\/strong> &#8211; you exert your power to make it happen.\u00a0 You have the power as CAD Manager to do this (hopefully) by using your position.\u00a0 You can force others to use your standard or your method or to move to some new piece of software.\u00a0 This method may show is way into things like intimidation or brute force or more subtly with coercion or hostage taking (keeping something from the user).<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.\u00a0 Protest<\/strong> &#8211; you complain about the issues to the point where people do something because you are right or because they want to shut you up.\u00a0 Cranky and critical may not make others your best friends but it does sometimes make people change things.\u00a0 This may show itself as being a tattle tale or a whistle blower (in the negative sense).<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.\u00a0 Pronouncement<\/strong> &#8211; kind of like Power, but this just makes statement, sends memos and makes documents that set out the target for the change.\u00a0 Pronouncements initiate a process change by defining the end, but sometimes not the process of getting there. \u00a0 They can be ineffective in establishing real long term change.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4.\u00a0 Persuasion<\/strong> &#8211; the process of convincing someone that change is needed, cannot be avoided and must happen to create a better environment.\u00a0 This is using conversation and connection to effect change.\u00a0 It is using argument (the positive kind) and reason to move someone along.<\/p>\n<p>Of all of these, Power, Protest, Pronouncement or Persuasion, the last one has the best chance of effecting change that will stick.\u00a0 Change that will be embraced and make things better.\u00a0 Persuasion moves someone who does not care, cares little or actually\u00a0 desires something different to move to your position.
