{"id":1148,"date":"2009-10-19T16:00:27","date_gmt":"2009-10-20T00:00:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.caddmanager.com\/CMB\/?p=1148"},"modified":"2009-10-19T20:41:40","modified_gmt":"2009-10-20T04:41:40","slug":"autocad-save-it-or-lose-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.caddmanager.com\/CMB\/2009\/10\/autocad-save-it-or-lose-it\/","title":{"rendered":"AutoCAD &#8211; Save it or Lose it"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The shout goes up&#8230; \u00a0 Save it or Lose it!<\/p>\n<p>That was the reminder that we all used say to keep our files safe.\u00a0 We were addressing the fact that a computer crash may take out your work.\u00a0 If it was not saved back to the server, then it might be lost.\u00a0 Sometimes this would be said in frustration by one that had just been bitten by a crash (software or hardware).\u00a0 Sometimes it was just a casual reminder.<\/p>\n<p>You may not be needing reminders like this to make sure that your users are remembering to save, but you do need to think about the whole save process.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">How often do you save?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Do you rely on AutoSaves to save your files?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Do they even think about saving?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">How much data are you willing to risk in an unsaved file?<\/p>\n<p>AutoSaves are not real saves of your file data.  It is a save to local.  The location is defined by the SAVEFILEPATH variable.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SAVETIME<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">This is the system variable that sets the automatic save interval, in minutes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">0 &#8211; Turns off automatic saving.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&gt;0 &#8211; Saves the drawing at intervals specified by the nonzero integer automatically<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The value of SAVETIME is an integer between 0 and 600 minutes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The SAVETIME timer starts as soon as you make a change to a drawing. It is reset and restarted by a manual QSAVE, SAVE, or SAVEAS.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So what do you set your Save Time as ? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I think that if you are in a good habit of saving your files and are not forgetful, then set it higher than 10 minutes.\u00a0\u00a0 You could even turn it off (not recommended). \u00a0 If you are not in the habit of saving then set it lower or at 10 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>My other Save rule of thumb&#8230;\u00a0 save you drawing every 10-15 minutes or so and after every major operation.\u00a0 Also save it when you are interrupted, leave your desk or get a phone call or chat message that might derail your thought process.<\/p>\n<p>You can set the time of an AutoSave in the Options Dialog box.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1157\" title=\"SaveTime\" src=\"https:\/\/www.caddmanager.com\/CMB\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/SaveTime.jpg\" alt=\"SaveTime\" width=\"391\" height=\"87\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.caddmanager.com\/CMB\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/SaveTime.jpg 391w, https:\/\/www.caddmanager.com\/CMB\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/SaveTime-300x66.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 391px) 100vw, 391px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Automatic Save<\/strong><br \/>\nSaves your drawing automatically at the intervals you specify. You can specify the location of all Autosave files by using the SAVEFILEPATH system variable.\u00a0 SAVEFILE (read-only) stores the name of the Autosave file.<\/p>\n<p>Note:\u00a0 Automatic save is disabled when the Block Editor is open.<\/p>\n<p>Minutes Between Saves: When Automatic Save is on, specifies how often the drawing is saved. (SAVETIME system variable)<\/p>\n<p>System Variables &#8211; you can type these in at the command line to make changes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SAVEFILEPATH<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Specifies the path to the directory for all automatic save files for the current session.<br \/>\nYou can also change the path on the Files tab in the Options dialog box.\u00a0 The default is to place it in a temp file under your Docs and Settings.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1155\" title=\"SaveFilePath\" src=\"https:\/\/www.caddmanager.com\/CMB\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/SaveFilePath.jpg\" alt=\"SaveFilePath\" width=\"439\" height=\"45\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.caddmanager.com\/CMB\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/SaveFilePath.jpg 439w, https:\/\/www.caddmanager.com\/CMB\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/SaveFilePath-300x30.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 439px) 100vw, 439px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>SAVEFILE <\/strong>stores the current automatic save file name.\u00a0 It is read only &#8211; so you can display it, but not edit it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The shout goes up&#8230; \u00a0 Save it or Lose it!
