{"id":598,"date":"2008-07-18T05:48:49","date_gmt":"2008-07-18T13:48:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.caddmanager.com\/CMB\/?page_id=598"},"modified":"2008-07-20T05:22:00","modified_gmt":"2008-07-20T13:22:00","slug":"software-collectors","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.caddmanager.com\/CMB\/journals\/journal-july-2008\/software-collectors\/","title":{"rendered":"Software Collectors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I have heard of many strange collections over the years&#8230;\u00a0 Snow Globes&#8230;\u00a0 Paintings on Velvet&#8230; Cork Screws&#8230;\u00a0 Hotel Keys&#8230;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.caddmanager.com\/CMB\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/corkscrews.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-602\" title=\"corkscrews\" src=\"https:\/\/www.caddmanager.com\/CMB\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/corkscrews.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"259\" height=\"201\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What about software?<\/p>\n<p>I have encountered many users that never seem to be satisfied with the current level of software titles that they have access to.\u00a0 I appreciate the users who are always looking for another tool that does the job better.\u00a0 But I have met a few that I have started calling &#8220;Collectors&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>They do not really seem interested in finding new tools that work better.\u00a0 Nor do they seem to be interested in replacing the ones that they have.\u00a0 What they seem to want is just &#8220;more stuff&#8221;.\u00a0 If anyone has something, they also want it.\u00a0 If others get new software, they all the sudden &#8220;need it&#8221; also.\u00a0 When you give it to them, they never seem to get around to using it.<\/p>\n<p>You don&#8217;t want to discourage them from using new software, but you don&#8217;t want to shell out the money at their every whim.<\/p>\n<p>So what do you do when you encounter one of these types?\u00a0 Here are a few things I have done&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Download Trials<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Get them the trial software.\u00a0 Let them test it before they get the real copy.\u00a0 If they are just collectors and not users, then they will never get around to using it and you can avoid buying software for someone that may not need it.\u00a0 Most trials are 30 days or so.\u00a0 During the trial period, demand that they demonstrate a real need.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Refuse deployment<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You could just tell them &#8220;no&#8221;.\u00a0 It may be the best way to address them.\u00a0 Define the requirements for getting software and require them justify the need.\u00a0 No need &#8211; no software.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Delay deployment<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Just drag your feet.\u00a0 Sometimes, if they are just collectors, they will move on and forget that they requested it.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t delay so long that they have something to complain about, but at least make them come to you again.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t go back and ask them if they still want it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Check back to see if they are using it<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>No matter what you end up doing, check back with them to see if they are actually using the software.\u00a0 You may be able to either get the software back or encourage them to use it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Give it to them &#8211; they will never use it<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Finally &#8211; just give it to them.\u00a0 They won&#8217;t use it anyway.\u00a0 figure out some way to track it&#8217;s use and then remove the software that they never end up using.\u00a0 If\u00a0 it is licensed via a network pool, then there is little harm in installing software that a user will never use.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I have heard of many strange collections over the years&#8230;\u00a0 Snow Globes&#8230;\u00a0 Paintings on Velvet&#8230; Cork Screws&#8230;\u00a0 Hotel Keys&#8230; What about software?
