BIM - Where are all the subs?

Many Architectural firms have shifted over some or all of their design work to BIM.  Many of them have been doing it for some time.  One of the complaints I have heard is that there are not a lot of discipline subs that have begun the shift.  Structural, Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, etc.

What are they using and when will they jump to BIM.

When they do - they have their own models?  How do we integrate?

We need to get the second wave of adoption moving forward.  Disciplines other than architectural need to be pressing forward.  Autodesk has released software for Structural and MEP.  They have successfully escorted many firms toward these products.  It is time for the second wave to get in place.

Here are a few things that I would like to see happen:

1.  Vendors should publish a list of all firms using (or at least buying) their products.  It helps teams to get others in place that are like minded.  I want to know who has moved to BIM and how I can get them on my team.

2.  User groups need to be established for the other disciplines.

3.  Firms that use BIM need to brag about it.  Or at least let the architects know that they are out there.

4.  Owners need to let everyone know that they are ready for BIM and willing to take on some of the risk for moving to these tools.  They may need to pay a little more or see schedules slip if the learning curve gets steep.  The reward is ultimately theirs.

Having a list of firms that know how to use BIM tools will help the industry by creating partnerships for progress.  Moving the ball forward together, they can keep the revolution alive
